STRATEGY · TEE CHOICE
Senior tees are not a task—but math.
Only one-third of men over 65 switch from white tees to yellow or red. The other two-thirds lose 4 to 7 strokes per round—not because they play worse, but because they play the wrong course.
MIt was 64 years ago that I was honest for the first time: my average drive plus second shot no longer reached the middle of the green on the long holes. Not even close. Nevertheless, I stood on the white tees – out of habit, perhaps out of pride. I switched to yellow. Three rounds later: 6 strokes less. Without swinging differently, without practicing more. Just by changing the marker.
Tee choice is the only scoring decision you make before the first shot. It costs nothing, requires no practice, doesn't change your game – except the course. Yet, it's the most frequently mishandled decision in senior golf. The reason isn't a lack of data. The reason is pride.
What the data on tea choices really shows
Three steps to choosing the right tea
Tee choice is the only scoring lever decided before the first stroke. Those who forgo it out of pride are giving away the easiest score improvement in senior golf.
— Dean Knuth, former USGA Senior Director of Handicapping
Three patterns shape the tea selection among senior golfers. Those who understand them no longer make decisions emotionally, but strategically.
Pride beats strategy.
The most common reason for playing from the white tees is: „At 65, I'm not playing senior tees yet.” This is a statement of identity, not a score statement. Those who prioritize score over self-image lose 4 to 7 strokes.
Habits beat data
Those who have played from the white tees for 30 years don't change that without a conscious decision. Most senior golfers never look at their median carry—and in doing so, they make the most important bag decision in the dark.
Convention trumps reality
In the home club, tees are often chosen collectively: „We all play from yellow.” Whoever prioritizes their own score over the convention is optimizing their own game—and usually doesn't disrupt the flight dynamics.

What the right choice of tea cannot replace
Tee selection is the fastest scoring lever — but it doesn't replace the short game or course management. Playing from the yellow tees without a strategy for each hole still gains 4 to 7 strokes, but leaves another 5 to 8 strokes on the course. Tee choice is the first lever — not the only one.
