TECHNOLOGY · 5TH WOOD
The 5-wood — the senior all-rounder.
The 5-wood is the most versatile club in the senior bag: fairway, semi-rough, rough, long par 3, par 5 approach. If you have a 5-wood with a senior shaft, you have a club that covers every situation between 150 and 175 meters.
SSince I turned 65, my 5-wood has become the most used club in my bag. I hit my driver off the tee a maximum of 6 times per round, but my 5-wood 4-7 times per round—for approaches, layups, off the tee on par 3s, and out of the rough. It's the only club in my bag that allows me to handle virtually any fairway situation from 160 meters.
The 5-wood is the quintessential senior club. Its loft (typically 18–19°), size (sweet spot larger than a 4-iron), and versatility (from the tee to the rough) make it the most common approach club in a senior golfer's bag. If you don't have one, you should reserve the next slot in your bag for it.
Three strengths of the 5 wood
Three tips for the 5 wood
If a senior golfer can only own one fairway wood, it should be a 5-wood. Nothing comes close in versatility.

Three Principles for 5-Wood Success.
Leveraging versatility
The 5-wood is the only club that serves tee shots, fairways, light rough, and heavy rough equally well. Senior golfers should actively use it in all four situations.
Custom shaft required
Senior-specific shaft (R-Flex or Senior) is not optional - it is a prerequisite for full distance. Standard shafts cost 10-15 m.
Sweep iron hit
The 5-wood is not hit like an iron. Sweep stroke with a flat angle. Those who understand this will avoid topped and fat shots.

What the 5-wood doesn't replace
The 5-wood is the most versatile senior club — but it doesn't replace the 3-wood off the tee or the wedges around the green. It's an all-rounder, not a specialist. Anyone who fills all their bag slots with 5-woods loses specific advantages in each distance zone.
