Irons 5 through 9 are the staples of any senior golfer’s bag—they provide that reliable range between the wood and the wedge. But: at what success rate does the 5-iron still make sense, and when is it better to use the 9-wood or a hybrid instead? And which of these irons is actually the weakest link in your distance progression?

For me, the 7-iron delivers the most consistent data (σ-lengths under 6 m), while the 5-iron is significantly more scattered (σ over 10 m). This is a classic senior pattern: the longer the iron, the harder it is to be consistent. The solution for me was to almost completely replace the 5-iron with fairway woods (W5/W7) – the 7-9 irons remain in the bag as transport clubs.

What are your Spaced Stairs What about you? Which irons do you still carry, which ones have you taken out of your bag, and what prompted that decision? I'm interested in specific carry distances and landings from the ground, not just range theory.
