Deep rough is where senior realism must win over senior optimism. Classic tour pro tip: if you can see the ball, you can hit it. With reduced swing speed (75-90 mph), this is no longer true. The grass eats up energy, the club turns over on impact – the result is usually an unintended pulled hook into the next hazard.
My rule of thumb: in deep rough, I take at least one more club with more loft (from a wedge up to 56° or 60°), short swing, lay up to a safe distance. Only try for the pin if there's no way through and the risk is manageable. The score statistics from recent rounds confirm this – for me, a layup saves an average of 1 stroke per hole in deep rough.
What is your Senior Rule of Thumb In the deep rough? Club selection, setup, and when do you attempt the pin shot? And honestly: how often have you failed to get out of the rough on a layup?
