We seniors often skip the mental side of golf – we think it's a topic for tour pros. But: especially from age 60, when we no longer have the power reserves, it becomes Course Management the biggest lever. The following pre-shot routine has proven to be a score-saver for me on holes with water: a 5-second pause before every shot where water is in play, and the ONE question - which club absolutely CANNOT land this shot in the water with headwind and normal σ scatter?
This is the safety club. I only play the pin club when the water hazard is secured multiple times (carry + 10m buffer). On Wendlohe Course C (June 12, 2026), this exact rule saved me 2 penalties—and about 4 strokes. My bag was wet that day, by the way (rain delay before tee 1, cold)—the routine still worked.
Do you have your own Pre-Shot Routine in Risk shots (water, out of bounds, bunkers in play)? And when does the pin club's rational routine override this? I'm interested in concrete examples – gladly with the score effect in hindsight.
