Taper Calibration

Wedge Distance Calibration — the most important senior KPI.

Senior golfers typically overestimate their wedge distances by 14-18 percent. Approach shots systematically land short—the most common cause of lost strokes in senior golf. How wedge distance calibration works and which three distances are mandatory.

MMy wedge distances were 15 percent too long in my head — a typical senior effect. With one hour on a launch monitor and honest median data collection, everything changed: PW 90 instead of 105 m, GW 75 instead of 88 m, SW 55 instead of 65 m. Three weeks later, my GIR (greens in regulation) percentage had increased from 11 to 25 percent. Wedge calibration is the fastest lever for improving a senior's score.

Wedge distance calibration is the honest assessment of median carry for PW, GW, and SW across the three standard distances of 30, 50, and 70 meters. Plus full swing median. Without these values, every approach shot decision in senior golf is based on feel rather than reality. A single hour with a launch monitor produces reliable data for years.

Three wedge standard distances

Distance 1 — 30 m (Pitch/Chip)
✓ HALF/THIRD SWING.
30-meter pitch: Typically a half swing with a sand wedge (54-58°). Precisely capture the senior median distance. A dispersion of ±3-5 meters is considered very good. If dispersion is larger: training is needed for the 30-meter distance.
Distance 2 — 50 m (Three-quarter swing)
✓ THREE-QUARTERS OR 56°.
50-m Approach: Typical three-quarter swing with a 52° or 56° wedge. Aim for the senior median. Dispersion +/- 5-7 m. Most senior approach errors happen here — calibration is most important.
Distance 3 — 70 m (Full swing range)
Full swing or 60°.
70-meter approach: Full swing with 60° or controlled swing with 56°. Capture senior median. Dispersion ±7-10 m. This distance is often combined with a ¾ PW swing.

Three Steps to Wedge Distance Calibration

Step 1 — Launch Monitor Session
✓ ONE HOUR WITH THE PGA PRO.
One hour with a launch monitor (TrackMan, GCQuad, Garmin R10). €80-150 with a PGA pro or free with custom fitting. 10 balls per wedge per distance. Capture median and dispersion.
Step 2 — Create Bag Card
WRITTEN IN THE BAG.
Median scores on a bag card. Per wedge: full swing, three-quarter, half. Plus 30/50/70-meter medians. Laminate and keep in your bag. Actively consult on the course.
Step 3 — Bi-annual recalibration
✓ SEASON START + MIDDLE.
Wedge distances shift (swing mechanics, wedge grooves, seasonal shape). New launch monitor session every six months for updates. Senior discipline = current data.

If senior golfers calibrated their wedges once a year and trusted those numbers, the average handicap would drop by three to four strokes immediately.

Three senior wedge discipline tips.

Median beats best

Don't use best wedge shots for planning. Median values are the only relevant distance for planning.

Consult the bag-card

Before every wedge decision: look at the bag card. Feel is deceptive, the card has data.

Keep grooves up to date

Wedges with worn grooves lose spin and control. Have them checked every 2 years, replace if necessary.

What wedge calibration does not replace

Wedge calibration provides exact distances, but it does not replace wedge training itself or swing mechanics. Senior players with a perfect bag card but an unstable wedge swing will only benefit partially. Calibration + Wedge Routine + Pro Coaching = complete senior wedge leverage.

THREE FIRST STEPS

How to Dial in Your Wedge Distances in 30 Days

01
Book Launch Monitor Session
One hour with a PGA pro. €80-150. All wedges, all three distances. Take data with you in writing.
02
Create a bag tag
From the median values, a laminated bag card. Place in the bag. Consult on the next round.
03
Track GiR-Quote
After calibration: Track GiR ratio over 5 rounds. Expected improvement of 5-15 percentage points. Success measurable in 3-4 weeks.
