GiR-Quote Tracking — What's Behind the Numbers.

Greens in Regulation (GiR) is the second strongest predictor of score after putting. The senior standard is 15-35 percent. What's really behind the number and which three sub-KPIs explain the GiR value.

MA GIR percentage of 11% with a 65% rating was one green per 9-hole round in regulation. It sounded alarming, but it was reality. Tracking showed my approach wedges were the main problem (14% too long on median). After wedge calibration, my GIR percentage rose to 28%. Direct score effect: -3 strokes per round.

GiR measures how many holes the green is reached in regulation strokes (Par 3 = 1 stroke, Par 4 = 2 strokes, Par 5 = 3 strokes). Senior standard: 15-35 percent. Direct score correlation KPI: for every 10 percent higher GiR rate, approximately 2.5 fewer strokes per round.

Three sub-KPIs that explain GiR

Sub-KPI 1 — Approach Distance Median
✓ CORRECT WEDGES.
When wedge distances are calibrated (median instead of best), the GIR ratio increases measurably. Senior players with 14-18 percent overestimated wedges systematically land short of the green. Calibration is the most important GIR lever.
Sub-KPI 2 – Greens in Regulation (GIR)
✓ AUS FAIRWAY 2X GIR.
From the fairway, the GIR (Green in Regulation) percentage is about twice as high as from the rough. Senior FIR (Fairway in Regulation) percentage 50% + Approach consistency = 35% GIR. FIR training indirectly increases GIR.
Sub-KPI 3 - Strategy Discipline
✓ SELECT GOAL TO GREEN.
Senior players often aim for the center of the green, even when the pin is extremely close to the edge. Pin hunting costs GIR. The aim-for-the-center-of-the-green strategy is more conservative but more relevant for scoring in the senior age group.

Three Ways to Actively Improve GiR

Path 1 — Wedge Calibration
✓ DIRECT GEAR LEVER.
A launch monitor session: Calibrate wedge distances 30/50/70 m. Create bag map. Trust median values on the course. Typical GIR increase: 8-15 percent in 4-6 weeks.
Path 2 — Change approach strategy
✓ MIDDLE INSTEAD OF PIN.
On every approach shot: aim for the center of the green, not the pin. If the pin is extremely on the edge: aim 5-10 m to the side. Senior discipline increases greens in regulation by 5-10 percent.
Path 3 — Revise Club Selection
More swings, not fewer.
Approach: better one club more than too few. Landing on the green is more important than being pin-close. Senior players with this discipline win GIR without training effort.

Greens in Regulation (GiR) is the second-most important statistic in golf after putts per round. For senior players, it’s often where the biggest score leak is — and the biggest opportunity.

Three GiR Tracking Methods.

Manual Scorecard

Mark Greens in Regulation (GiR) per hole on the scorecard after each round (circle = GiR). Senior standard no equipment.

Wearable automatic

Arccos and Shot Scope automatically capture greens in regulation (GiR) via GPS and shot tracking. Convenience benefit.

Bebrassie / Online Tracker

Bebrassie captures GiR and integrates it into the score report. Senior user experience is very good.

What GiR-Tracking does not replace

A GIR stat shows approach performance, but it doesn't replace putting or scrambling. A high GIR stat with poor putting doesn't produce low scores. GIR + Putting + Scrambling = complete scoring methodology.

THREE FIRST STEPS

How to actively improve GiR in 30 days

01
Determine baseline GiR over 5 rounds
Compile the last 5 rounds of GIR values. Average is baseline.
02
Wedge Calibration
Launch Monitor Session, Calibrate Wedge Distances. Create Bag Map. Direct GIR Lever.
03
Middle-of-the-green discipline
Next 5 rounds: approach every shot to the center of the green. Compare GIR stats. Expected improvement: 5-15 percent.
