TECHNIC · 56° WEDGE

The 56° wedge – the versatile wedge in the senior bag.

The 56° wedge (classic sand wedge loft) is the most versatile short-game club in a senior's bag: bunkers, greenside chips, flop shots, short pitches. 55-yard full swing, many swing variations. Three applications every senior golfer should master.

MA 56° wedge is by far the most used club after the putter. For every approach shot under 60 meters, I reach for it — whether it's from the fairway, the rough, or a bunker. Height, spin, versatility. Whoever masters a 56° has the greatest short-game advantage in a senior bag.

The 56° wedge is the most versatile short-game club in a senior bag. With 56° of loft, it produces a high trajectory, high spin, and good stopping power from any lie — fairway, light rough, thick rough, bunkers. Those who master it technically will see significant score improvements.

Three applications for the 56° wedge

Application 1 — Greenside Chips (5-15 m)
✓ STANDARD CHIP GUN.
From 5-15 yards from the green: 56° chip with hands ahead of the ball, short swing, small and clean. High up-and-down percentage among senior players — the standard chip in the senior short game.
Application 2 - Bunker Shots
✓ CLASSIC SAND LOFT.
56° is the classic sand wedge loft. In the bunker: wide stance, open clubface, hit the sand first. With good technique, senior players can achieve a 60-70% success rate on bunker saves.
Application 3 — Full Swing Approach (55 m)
High Consistency.
Full swing 56°: 55 m median carry, very consistent (±3 m dispersion). Ideal for 50-60 m approach distances. High trajectory, soft landing, best stopping characteristics.

Three tips for the 56-degree wedge

Tip 1 — Chip Setup with hands forward
✓ NO „LIFT” ATTEMPT.
Chip shot with 56°: Hands in front of the ball, ball position back in the stance, short swing. Loft creates the height — don't try to lift the ball. The most common source of error is „wanting to help.”.
Tip 2—Bunkers with an open clubface
✓ 30° OPEN.
In the bunker: Open the clubface about 30°, wide stance, hit the sand first (5-7 cm behind ball). Full follow-through. Senior bunker technique usually fails due to insufficient trust in hitting the sand.
Tip 3 — Practice the three-quarter swing
✓ FOR 35 M PRECISION.
Three-quarter swing 56°: 35 m very precise. For shorter approach and pitch distances. Dispersion ±2 m. One of the most valuable senior wedge options — often practiced, rarely mastered.

The 56° wedge is the most important club in a senior golfer's short game. Master it, and you'll save 4 to 6 strokes per round.

Three Principles for 56° Wedge Mastery.

Leveraging versatility

Chip, Bunker, Full Swing, Three-Quarter — the 56° offers four very different applications. Senior players who have mastered all four swing types save 4-6 strokes per round.

Customize setup specifically

Setup position per application: Chip in front, bunker open, full swing in the middle. Clear setup discipline produces clear results.

Trust spin and height

The 56° produces height and spin through the loft—not through the swing. Anyone who tries to „help” loses both. Trust the club.

What the 56° wedge doesn't replace

The 56° wedge is the most versatile short-game club in a senior golfer’s bag—but it doesn’t replace either the 52° wedge (for medium-range approaches) or a dedicated lob wedge (60°). A three-wedge setup (48-52-56) is sufficient for 90% of senior golfers. 60° wedges are specialized tools for very tight pins or high obstacles.

THREE FIRST STEPS

How to Master the 56° Wedge in 30 Days

01
Establish chip routine
30 greenside chips at 56°. Setup: Hands in front of the ball, short swing. Track your up-and-down percentage. With a 40% % rate, you’ll save 2–3 strokes per round.
02
Bunker Training
A bunker lesson at the practice bunker: 20 shots with an open clubface, hit the sand first. Build confidence. Repeat before the next round.
03
Calibrate three-quarter swing
Range Session: 20 three-quarter swings with a 56° [wedge]. Note median distance. Update bag card with 35 yards as an additional wedge distance.
