TECHNOLOGY · IRON 4
Iron 4 — when it still makes sense after 60.
The 4-iron is the borderline case in the senior bag: still playable at 85+ mph clubhead speed; below that, it gets difficult. When it stays, when it goes — and how to hit it technically correctly.
IAt 65, I've stuck with my 4-iron—unlike my 3-iron. Reason: my clubhead speed is 87 mph, just within the acceptable range. And I hit it well, which makes my distance consistent. But: I've also swapped it out for a 4-hybrid on some days—when it's windy or there's a high probability of rough. Bag flexibility is a tool, not a disadvantage, after 60.
The 4-iron in the senior bag is a player's choice, not a recommendation. With an 85+ mph clubhead speed and good striking consistency, it remains playable. Below that, distance becomes unstable. Three criteria help with the decision – applied honestly.

Three tips for the 4-iron for senior golfers
If you still hit your 4-iron well, keep it. If you don’t, replace it with a hybrid yesterday. There’s no middle ground for senior golfers.

Three arguments for or against the 4-iron in a senior bag.
Speed is the deciding factor
With a clubhead speed of 85+ mph, the 4-iron remains playable. Below that, it becomes technically borderline—a different club is a better option.
Consistency is key
The sweet spot size of the 4-iron is small. If you don't hit it dead center, you systematically lose distance. The consistency test gives a clear answer.
Lie distribution is the deciding factor
If you're playing an 80 % off the fairway, you can stick with a 4-iron. If you often hit from the rough or difficult lies, a 4-hybrid is the more reliable choice.

What iron 4 does not replace
The 4-iron is a precise club for fairway approaches from 165-180 m, but it neither replaces a 5-wood nor a good 4-hybrid. Bag setups should be decided based on skill level and frequency of lies: 4-iron plus hybrid, or hybrid instead of 4-iron. Double loft classes are rarely efficient.
