Iron 4 — when it still makes sense after 60.

The 4-iron is the borderline case in the senior bag: still playable at 85+ mph clubhead speed; below that, it gets difficult. When it stays, when it goes — and how to hit it technically correctly.

IAt 65, I've stuck with my 4-iron—unlike my 3-iron. Reason: my clubhead speed is 87 mph, just within the acceptable range. And I hit it well, which makes my distance consistent. But: I've also swapped it out for a 4-hybrid on some days—when it's windy or there's a high probability of rough. Bag flexibility is a tool, not a disadvantage, after 60.

The 4-iron in the senior bag is a player's choice, not a recommendation. With an 85+ mph clubhead speed and good striking consistency, it remains playable. Below that, distance becomes unstable. Three criteria help with the decision – applied honestly.

Three criteria for the iron 4 from 60

Criterion 1 - Clubhead Speed
OVER 85 MPH.
A 4-iron requires about 85 mph of clubhead speed for a playable trajectory. Senior players with less than that produce a trajectory that is too flat, losing carry. Launch monitor testing provides the answer.
Criterion 2 — Hit Consistency
✓ 70+ % CENTRAL HITS.
If you hit the 4-iron centrally on 70 out of 100 shots, your distance will remain consistent. If fewer than 50 out of 100 shots are hit centrally, the variation in distance becomes too great—the loss in score outweighs the gain in distance.
Criterion 3 - Lie Frequency
MOSTLY FROM THE FAIRWAY.
For those who mainly play the 4-iron from the fairway: usually okay. For those who often play it from the rough or difficult lies: hybrid or wood is better. The 4-iron cannot tolerate difficult situations.

Three tips for the 4-iron for senior golfers

Tip 1 — Prioritize from the fairway
✓ NO ROUGH PLAYERS.
Use the 4-iron only from the fairway. From the rough, reach for the 4-hybrid or 7-wood—they offer much better launch characteristics there. This helps senior players avoid frustrating mishits.
Tip 2 - Maintain full swing
No „control” swing.
A common mistake among seniors: Trying to „control” the 4-iron with a reduced swing. Wrong—the club needs a full swing. A reduced swing produces less spin and thus a shorter carry.
Tip 3 — Ball Position Forward
Closer to the left heel.
Ball position about 3-5 cm forward (closer to the left heel) instead of center. This produces a slightly higher trajectory and better stopping power on the green. Senior players benefit from the softer landing.

If you still hit your 4-iron well, keep it. If you don’t, replace it with a hybrid yesterday. There’s no middle ground for senior golfers.

Three arguments for or against the 4-iron in a senior bag.

Speed is the deciding factor

With a clubhead speed of 85+ mph, the 4-iron remains playable. Below that, it becomes technically borderline—a different club is a better option.

Consistency is key

The sweet spot size of the 4-iron is small. If you don't hit it dead center, you systematically lose distance. The consistency test gives a clear answer.

Lie distribution is the deciding factor

If you're playing an 80 % off the fairway, you can stick with a 4-iron. If you often hit from the rough or difficult lies, a 4-hybrid is the more reliable choice.

What iron 4 does not replace

The 4-iron is a precise club for fairway approaches from 165-180 m, but it neither replaces a 5-wood nor a good 4-hybrid. Bag setups should be decided based on skill level and frequency of lies: 4-iron plus hybrid, or hybrid instead of 4-iron. Double loft classes are rarely efficient.

THREE FIRST STEPS

How to Make the 4-Iron Decision in 30 Days

01
Measuring clubhead speed
A launch monitor session: measure 4-iron swing speed. Under 85 mph: consider selling. Over 85 and good hit consistency: keep it.
02
Alternative testing
Same appointment: 10 balls, 4-hybrid from the same distance. Comparison: median carry, dispersion, hit quality. For most senior golfers, the hybrid wins.
03
Three Rounds to Decide the Outcome
Three consecutive rounds: Round 1 with a 4-iron, Round 2 with a hybrid instead of a 4-iron, Round 3 free choice. Compare score and swing feel.
