No manufacturer advertises the 4-wood. It's hardly mentioned in any advertising brochure, and no Tour player promotes it. That's precisely why it's often the most honest choice for a senior golfer's bag \u2014 if the numbers are right. What the 4-wood can do, where it doesn't help, and why the golf industry prefers to sell hybrids.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Go into any pro shop and ask for a 4-wood. The usual answer is: \u201eWe don't have that in stock \u2014 why don't you take a 3-wood or a hybrid?\u201d The reason is rarely your distance gap. The reason is margin: 3-woods and hybrids sell ten times as often, fill shelf space, and contribute to marketing budgets. The 4-wood is the club that hardly anyone pushes \u2014 and that's precisely what makes it interesting.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The basic idea is simple: There's a loft gap of about 3\u00b0 between the 3-wood (loft ~15\u00b0) and the 5-wood (loft ~18\u00b0). For senior swing speeds, this translates to a distance difference of about 15\u201320 meters. The 4-wood (loft 16\u201317\u00b0) fits right in between. Whether you need to close this gap depends solely on whether you feel it in your score\u2014not on what a manufacturer tells you.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Marketing promises that every 4-wood is \u201eplayable off the deck.\u201d The truth: the sole, loft, and center of gravity are what matter. Request demo balls from fairway grass\u2014not off a tee peg. If the ball doesn't get airborne there, even the most expensive shaft won't help.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What the 4-wood doesn't replace<\/h2>\n

At best, the 4-wood solves a distance problem in the 160-180 meter range. It does not solve a ball-striking problem, a green-attack strategy, and certainly not a wedge deficit. If you can't hit range balls cleanly with a 5-wood, you won't with a 4-wood either. The scoring effect only comes when you reliably produce the distance and truly need it for your score. Everything else is marketing.<\/p>\n
